The Gonstead Chiropractic System

Clarence Selmer Gonstead changed the face of Chiropractic practice and introduced a new and improved method of relieving pain and rehabilitation. Dating back to as early as the late 1930’s, Gonstead’s remarkable technique continues to flourish as a popular form of chiropractic care.

While in trade school, Gonstead developed acute rheumatoid arthritis and it quickly moved over his feet and knees to an extent where he could no longer get out of bed. After weeks of being treated by University doctors to no avail, his Aunt suggested he see her doctor. J.B.Olsen, a chiropractor came to Gonstead’s aid and after a series of adjustments he could walk again. It proved to be a life-altering event for Gonstead.

In 1923, Gonstead graduated from Palmer School of Chiropractic and began his own practice in Wisconsin.

Among his many other discoveries, one more profound than the rest was that of the mechanism of subluxation. Once believed to be the result of the vertebral bone causing nerve pressure, Gonstead emphasized that the vertebral disc was the primary cause of nerve pressure.

He went on to develop an intelligent and accurate method of adjusting with the use of both hands, one for contact and the other for stabilization.

Gonstead’s practice flourished. In 1939, he developed a new and more modern chiropractic office and began working over six days a week, adjusting up to 250 patients a day. Patients travelled from all over the United States to receive his unique, precise care. By 1954, Gonstead’s success captured the attention of other chiropractors. Without sacrificing the care of his patients, Gonstead agreed to provide informal classes for others to learn his exclusive approach.

By 1964, Gonstead needed a larger facility to accommodate his growing practice. This allowed for 11 adjusting rooms, a complete chemistry laboratory, research facilities and various seminar rooms. A year later, a full service motel was built across from Gonstead’s practice to house the many patients that would travel long distances to see him. His extraordinary reputation was now attracting people from all over the globe.
